Synergy Schools Solar Challenge

The Synergy Schools Solar Challenge is a joint initiative between Synergy and the Science Teachers Association of WA (STAWA).

The program is designed to address the low number of students choosing to study, Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, what are collectively known as ‘STEM’ subjects by enabling Year 6 and Year 8 students to get involved in a fun hands-on solar energy initiative.

Open to years 6 and 8 students across Western Australia. Schools have the chance to take part in a free resourced, hands-on energy initiative that gives students the opportunity to build their own model solar-powered cars - before they put their knowledge to the test in a fun race against neighbouring schools.

The Brief

Synergy recognised that teachers had limited time and therefore providing an additional resource to their print material would help teachers save time in understanding how to build their solar-powered cars. It would also provide an additional resource in the classroom that teachers could use to help instruct their students on how to build.

The Project

Synergy asked us to create 10 videos; 5 promotional and 5 how-to videos.

We worked collaboratively with Synergy to develop scripts and shotplans for the shoot, with Synergy leading the shot/script planning. The full day’s shoot was split into two - with the first half of of the day being focused on the promotional videos, and the second half the how-to videos.

Whilst 10 videos were created Synergy recieved a total of 35 files as each video is outputting in multiple formats including 16:9 versions optimised for YouTube and Facebook, both with and without captions as well as 4:5 format videos, again with and without captions - perfect for social media channels.

The How-To Videos

Sneaky BTS

For this project we shot in an unusual manner for us - a top-down style that’s familiar for many internet videos.

We ran a two-camera setup to allow an ‘top-down’ and also a close-up angle to be achieved.

The top-down was achieved with a camera suspended between two stands, the customised background, laid flat on the table, provided a visually nice surface for the talent to work on.

The Promotional Videos

This project was a great showcase of how GINGERBEARD Media works with clients on a range of projects. We worked collaboratively to create Synergy’s vision and have provided teachers with a resource that will help them save time.
