Lauren Breen, Curtin University - Grief Literacy Study
At GINGERBEARD Media, we’re often invited to work on projects that go beyond simply telling a story — projects that have the potential to make a real difference in people’s lives. One such opportunity came when we were invited to work with Professor Lauren Breen at Curtin University.
Our last project with Lauren helped communicate her initial findings in her research, we were asked to continue in assist Lauren and her project - detailing the next stage.
Lauren and her team are leading researchers in the field of grief literacy, particularly focused on young people. Their mission was to share the results of an important study, and in doing so, provide much-needed resources to young people navigating grief.
This was not a corporate brief or a commercial campaign. It was about creating content that could educate, support, and empower.
Let’s check out the main video we produced - a summary of the research’s findings.
Our Approach
The project involved producing two distinct types of video content. First, a main 3:30-minute educational piece that presented the study’s results in a clear and engaging way. This was aimed at reporting and summarising the research findings.
Alongside this, we also created a series of five short social media clips designed to speak directly to young people on the topic of grief. These videos were more relaxed, conversational, and approachable — the sort of content young people are more likely to engage with online.
To bring the project to life, we filmed at Curtin University with Lauren, three members of her research team, and a group of young people who had supported the project and been a part of it’s working group. We worked closely with everyone on camera, providing coaching and direction so that their delivery felt natural while still staying true to the research.
Of course, filming outdoors always adds a layer of unpredictability. On the day, we had to navigate changeable weather conditions while keeping the team comfortable and the production flowing smoothly. Our preparation — combined with flexibility and efficiency on set — ensured we stayed on track and captured exactly what we needed.
What We Delivered
By the end of the project, we delivered:
One 3:30 main educational video (delivery in 16x9 format, with and without captions) explaining the research findings.
Five short social media clips (9x16 format, with and without captions) tailored for platforms where young people are most active.
The combination of formal and social content meant Lauren and her team had a suite of assets that could serve different audiences and purposes.
Impact & Reflection
What made this project unique was its heart. This wasn’t just about sharing information — it was about opening conversations on a subject often overlooked in young people’s lives. By combining professional production with a friendly, approachable style, we were able to help Lauren’s team turn research findings into accessible, real-world resources.
It’s projects like this that remind us why we do what we do at GINGERBEARD Media: using video to inform, to connect, and to make a difference.
